COMPOUNDING PHARMACY CLEANROOM CONTAMINATION CONTROL

Are you confident in your compliance with USP <797> contamination control requirements?

  • Comply with USP <797> guidelines using Ecolab/Veltek products, tools and training
  • Reduce the risk of contaminants via compounded sterile preparations
  • Help protect staff from exposure to contaminants
This stage involves activities to prevent contaminants from entering the clean room area carried by people or supplies. Personnel entering the clean room need to follow a process of garbing and hand hygiene to limit contaminants, and the supplies that enter the room have to be handled in a way that reduces the potential for contamination.
Step two in the Circle of Compliance is checking the facility for the air cleanliness by measuring non-viable particulate and, most important, viable (live) organisms. The facility must be certified for compliance by the leadership of the facility at the time of facility startup, and every 6 months after that, or whenever any changes are made to the facility (ie. Servicing, installing or moving equipment).

Other events that require testing include the detection of possible problems with products, possible issues with staff technique, or a patient infection that could be the result of contamination of a CSP.

Contamination control best practices call for daily use of EPA registered disinfectants on most compounding pharmacy surfaces. Use sterile disinfectants to prevent the introduction of contaminants into the clean room. USP <797> calls for frequent cleaning and decontamination of surfaces in the clean room. Using sterile products prevents the introduction of contaminants into your critical areas.
